School partnerships

Having assisted schools throughout The Gambia for many years through funding projects such as the renovation of classrooms and purchasing school furniture, The Gambia Experience’s School Development Fund is exploring other ways in which to help support Gambian Schools.

School partnerships are a great opportunity for children from both countries to develop and learn about other cultures. Having worked in The Gambia for over 20 years, we have many links and a very knowledgeable resort team, giving us a good background to help support school links.

Our partnership aim

Initially we would like to assist about 10 Hampshire schools, catering for various age groups, to link with schools in The Gambia. This would then be rolled out to other UK schools.

Why link school?

School partnerships, if carried out correctly, can be of great benefit to both schools involved. Although it is not a requirement within the UK curriculum it is highly regarded, promoting child development and global understanding. Through school partnerships, children can learn about sharing, working in teams, volunteering and citizenship. It can also help to challenge any preconceived ideas of other cultures and changes children’s perceptions of the world. They can share their different views, experiences and learn about a different way of life.

Levels of involvement.

Levels of involvement for the scheme can vary depending on age of the children and the size of school. We can fit the scheme to suit your schools needs.

Please see levels of involvement below:

Ideas for school projects

  • Culture – Drumming, Dancing, Singing, Story telling (traditional West African folk tales often have an ethical basis)
  • Geography – Water shortage, Long shore drift, Climate
  • History/Literature – Slavery, Colonialism, Alex Hayley’s novel “Roots”
  • Economics – World Trade, Aid
  • Internationalism / Western influences
  • Tourism

What we do

Once a UK school is interested in the scheme, we will then help with the initial set up of the partnership.

This includes:

  • Finding a Gambian school of a similar age and size.
  • Collecting communication details for both schools and passing them to the partner.
  • Giving both schools an information pack containing a school partnership guide, background information on the partnered country and activity sheets.
  • Assisting with the transportation of letters to and from The Gambia through the help of our resort office based in Kololi.

We will take a back step once they are linked and leave the schools to develop their partnership in the way that they wish.
